Structure 1 is a 3 minute piece composed for solo cello. It uses chance to create timbral change over time. The performer must navigate between different bow positions and timbral shifts to create a continuous sound surface. Playing techniques are chosen for their position along a clean/granular spectrum. Sounds shift from being more pure to more distorted over the 3 minutes of the piece. Discrete states are chosen by chance, then they are interpolated between. The distance in time between these states is constant, so the piece retains a base temporal order.

This work is part of a short series of pieces written to explore performance techniques of various orchestral instruments.
