Lemon consists of a single written sound, the highest possible, for a performer of a blowing instrument. The sound pushes the performer to their maximum ability, as they are forced to find a way of firstly achieving such a sound, then being able to sustain it for the duration of the performance. The piece, being of indeterminate duration, allows the performer to choose their own limitations of technique and endurance.
This piece is part of a series of early explorations in jazz improvisation, where restrictions could be put on performers to achieve new and interesting results. These pieces would frequently be used in rehearsals with friends at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I would experiment with new improvisational dynamics, and explore rules-based structures.
